Soldier’s funeral a private affair

Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal, 10 Oct 06

Today’s funeral for Pte. Josh Klukie is intended to be a private family affair, but with members of the Thunder Bay military garrison turning out in force to support their fallen comrade.

Klukie, 23, was killed Sept. 29 by an explosive device planted under a bridge while he was on foot patrol in the Panjwaii district of Afghanistan.

The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Brodie Street, with a private interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery on W. Oliver Road.

Thunder Bay Police will be controlling traffic in the Brodie Street area and along Arthur Street to facilitate the funeral procession.

Organizers of the ceremony are asking local citizens to be aware of the procession and allow it to proceed without interruption.

Klukie was a member of the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Petawawa, Ont.

He was the 37th Canadian solider to die in Afghanistan since 2002, and third soldier from the Thunder Bay area to die in action this year.

A memorial to Pte. Josh Klukie sits near a basketball net off Lakeshore Drive near Silver Harbour Road, where he played the sport in his youth. The memorial consists of a basketball, flowers, photographs and a cross dedicated to Klukie who was killed Sept. 29 in Afghanistan.
